People say that marketing is about closely planning your every move, studying the market and then launching the product.
Marketing is defined as, knowing what a customer wants and giving it to them, how true is this, i mean how true, not much... see for example coke, did it come to India with a special India flavour or did it come here and then produce a regional flavour?? There are 'n' number of examples to support this. Marketing is more of a game of intuition, and less of set theories and planned moves. If a particular marketing move made by a company was successful in a particular market, why wouldn’t all the companies follow the same moves and benefit from the same strategy?? Why does one thing that works for 'a' company completely fails when it come to another company?? There are no answers to these questions. It is as good as explaining the universe to the cows grazing on the fields.
One can do a hundred market researches and a thousand products testing, take census instead of sampling... but can’t guarantee that the strategy employed and derived after such a heavy fact finding affair will certainly be successful in the market. Markets can’t be predicted! No one can! You never know, the small spot on the top of the 'I' of your brand name could play a spoiler for the product.
Marketing is all about intuition in the end!

markets cant be predicted but ur success of marketing efforts can surely be.
so as they are not mutually exclusive possibilty of one event can certainly tell u the predictabilty of other event.
two things coming here maths and philosphy. maths as predictabilty and philosphy as possibilty.
so if u can measure the success rate u r predicting the markets and if u cant then u r workin on possibilty.
both have final success or final failure.
no middle path.
but if its success we r in win- win situation.
be it maths (predicatabilty) VS philosphy(possibilty).
so ultimately marketing is both intuition and calculation.
finally waht does matter s that marketing rules.
May i know this enligthened soul please!!!! - Rejoy
Who says markets cannt be predicted ... offcourse they can be...
Marketing is about confidence .... and confidence is about predicting the future and saying i know whats gonna happen.....
apple ipod, starbucks, sachin tendulkar, motorola, ibm, reliance, macdonalds... do you think these are intutions...
I can bet my life on the fact they were planned marketing efforts.....
Marketing is about prediction, confidence, perseverance, innovation, commitment......intution can be part of it... but it has so very little part to play that i would nt say that marketing is about intution..
And please dont fool yourself by saying that marketing is about intution... The most important aspect of marketing is prediction... predeiction of need, efforts, resources.... and to manage them we require planning...
